The fully integrated High Precision 3D Printing Platform LithoProf3D®-GSII offers hybrid additive manufacturing, combining additive and subtractive fabrication processes with a variety of different materials within one equipment.

Multiphoton Optics GmbH has included groundbreaking novelties in its High Precision 3D Printer Platform LithoProf3D® – following its motto “Sustainability and Technology from People for People“. The new product LithoProf3D®-GSII was introduced into the market during this year’s TCT in Tokyo, one of Japan’s most important 3D Printing Exhibitions, at Photonics West in San Francisco, USA, and at the W3+ Fair in Wetzlar, Germany.

Focus on Multifunctionality and Flexibility

The previous model of our 3D Printing Platform focused on a modular design: Different modules can be implemented into the machine without changing the general configuration. A Vision-2-Align system enables the user to detect optical input and output facets in components. For example, photonic integrated circuits or laser dies, a wafer chuck allows to fabricate wafer-scale optics, or a bath setup to create several cm sized structures. Our advanced version of the High Precision 3D Printing Platform, LithoProf3D®-GSII, offers additional capabilities for production: Not only additive fabrication processes using polymer or hybrid polymer materials can be carried out. For the first time, direct additive fabrication of metal structures and the structuring of 6” glass wafers was demonstrated. The level of processing supports to further bridge the gap between conventional nano and micro technologies, injection molding, and standard 3D printing technologies.

The equipment additionally impresses with the capability for hybrid additive fabrication. Besides additively building up structures, also subtractive fabrication can be used: positive-tone resist materials can be subtractively structured, utilizing available classical 2 and 2.5D lift-off processes, or 3D lift-off processes. Finally, thin metal films can be structured in a classical way, leaving nothing to desire. This allows, for example, the in-situ fabrication of optical apertures of variable designs or tailor-made printed electronics. At the same time customers continue to benefit from the commodities of the previous model: The new equipment offers high-performance and high-precision fabrication of micro and fiber optics for a vast amount of applications ranging from illumination and imaging to Augmented Reality. Also, we further improved usability by integrating touchscreens, mimicking the look and feel of a smartphone: intuitive, elegant, and easy to use.

Mix & Match: Production 4.0 outside the box

The intelligent concept of the equipment is flanked by an equally modular setup of the software. It consists of two main parts: software that generates the machine code for construction, and   control software that runs this machine code. This successful concept was further improved in the current model: The process of high precision 3D printing with fabrication strategies that can vary heavily depending on intended application was completely implemented in the machine code. This enables the LithoProf3D®-GSII to automatically execute both, simple 3D structuring processes and complicated procedures with various fabrication strategies in one process step, – high precision 3D printing ranging from sub-micrometer level to the centimeter scale for a wide variety of products: individually made optical devices, monolithically integrated optics, or micromechanical components, only to mention a few.

All printed components can be produced without assembly or post-processing of functional areas, because the build-up code is included in the fabrication strategy. This offers cost-efficient, resource saving, and sustainable production.

Die Multiphoton Optics GmbH hat – getreu Ihrem Motto „Technologie von Menschen für Menschen“ – ihre Hochpräzise 3D-Druckplattform LithoProf3D® grundlegend weiterentwickelt und stellte das Produkt in diesem Jahr bereits auf mehreren Fachmessen im In- und Ausland vor.

Multifunktionalität und Flexibilität im Fokus

Während im Vorläufer des LithoProf3D® die Modularität der Anlage im Vordergrund stand, durch die unterschiedlichste Module ohne Änderung der Maschinenkonfiguration in die Maschine eingebracht werden können, bietet die weiterentwickelte Variante des Hochpräzisen 3D-Druckers, der LithoProf3D®-GSII, zusätzliche Möglichkeiten in der Produktion. So können nicht nur polymere Materialien für die additive Fertigung eingesetzt werden, sondern erstmalig wurden auch additive erzeugte Metallstrukturen oder die Strukturierung von Glas gezeigt. So wird die Lücke zwischen klassischem und Hochpräzisem 3D-Druck und konventionellen Mikrotechnologien weiter geschlossen.

Das Maschinenkonzept besticht jedoch auch noch durch die Möglichkeit einer hybriden additiven Fertigung: neben additivem Aufbau von Strukturen können Strukturen auch subtraktiv, d.h. abtragend, in Polymeren und Metallfilmen gefertigt werden. Dies ermöglicht z.B. die in-situ-Herstellung von optischen Aperturen variablen Designs oder maßgeschneiderte gedruckte Elektroniken. Die Kunden müssen keinen einzigen der bisherigen Vorteile des Vorläufermodells aufgeben, denn die Herstellung von optischen Komponenten, die mit der 3D-Druckplattform mit hohem Durchsatz und mit höchster Präzision für die verschiedensten Applikationen – von Illumination über Imaging bis hin zu Augmented Reality – hergestellt werden können, bleibt in der neuen Maschine erhalten. Die Nutzerfreundlichkeit wurde durch die Integration von Touchscreens weiter verbessert, die an das Erlebnis eines Smartphones anknüpfen: intuitiv, formschön, einfach zu bedienen. 

Mix & Match: Produktion 4.0 einmal anders

Das intelligente Maschinenkonzept wird durch eine modular aufgebaute Software flankiert, bestehend aus einer Code-erzeugenden und einer Steuerungs-Software, auf der die Maschinencodes mit den hinterlegten Prozessstrategien, die je nach Applikation stark variieren können, ausgeführt werden. Dieses Erfolgskonzept wurde nicht geändert, jedoch weiter ausgebaut, in dem noch mehr Prozesse des hochpräzisen 3D-Drucks im Code hinterlegt und automatisiert mit unterschiedlichen Prozessstrategien abgearbeitet werden können – hochpräziser 3D-Druck von der Sub-µm zur Zentimeterskala für eine Vielzahl von Produkten: individuelle optische Komponenten, monolithisch integrierte Optiken oder auch mikromenchanische Bauteile. Durch den Herstellungscode, in den die Fabrikationsstrategie integriert ist, sind alle Komponenten ohne Montage und ohne Nachbearbeitungsprozesse der funktionalen Flächen herstellbar, so dass kosteneffizient, Ressourcen-schonend und nachhaltig gearbeitet werden kann.

Photonics West Superbowl

What do #PhotonicsWest in #SanFrancisco and #Superbowl 53 in Atlanta have in common?

They are both in the same country at the same time. As #MultiphotonOptics is known as a company supporting many different actions aside serious #B2B, we also #support other activities: young people in #science, #gender, #social, and #sports. Hagen Krauss, #WürzburgPanthers‘ Defensive Captain, has been passionate about #AmericanFootball for more than 20 years. He challenged us to fabricate something other than the usual #StatueofLiberty, (Link: Photonics West Daily 2015) but instead something related to his beloved #Superbowl.

We used #MultiphotonOptics High #Precision #3Dprinting equipment #LithoProf3D with different fabrication and exposure strategies to create the smallest #NFL logo and #lombardithrophy in the #world. Since The MPO Team had a lot of fun during fabrication, we also did a parameter search on the smallest #AmericanFootball #helmets in the world.

But this is not it. For the first time, we will demonstrate the transition of #microoptics in highest surface quality from the sub-100 µm to the several mm scale with nm surface #precision. We introduce our newest fully integrated #LithoProf3D machine, LithoProf3D-GSII into the market featuring the highest #fabricationspeed, multiple and combinable fabrication, and #exposure #strategies with nothing left to desire. #LithoProf3D now enables #MultiphotonOptics’ customers to use #additive #metal #printing. This now closes an open #challenge for #LithoProf3D: the machine is now capable to additively print hybrid #polymers and #metals, subtractively work on positive-tone #resins and thin metal films, and also pattern #photoresponsive glasses.

Dear customers, partners, and friends,

we thought 2017 was an exciting and successful year for Multiphoton Optics GmbH, but 2018 even outperformed it by far more than expected. This has become possible by the trust and the support we have received from all of you. You contributed to our success by many things, big ones, and also smaller ones, but we had the luck to cooperate with you, and followed our path in making MPO a worldwide known and successful company. Thank you!

We attended many exhibitions, conferences, and workshops all over the globe. We have received the Best of Industry Award 2018, and our CEO & Managing Director, Dr. Ruth Houbertz, was designated as Senator of Economy Europe this year. The team has boosted industrial throughput, scalability, and cost-down processes using our High Precision 3D Printing Platform LithoProf3D® even more than last year. The variety of materials which can be used in the equipment was increased, and we also demonstrated the final piece of the puzzle which is metal printing. Precision on demand is already water under the bridge, and we continued to further reduce process steps and use of resources to give our contribution to climate protection which is in the streamline of our company from the very beginning on, and even before that.

We have launched a fully integrated LithoProf3D® machine with more possibilities than before, the LithoProf3D®-GSII. Particularly its capability to be part of standard process workflows has been shown in many integration projects. Our customer’s requirements have challenged us continuously. Our excellent team finds its way to overcome obstacles and to support our customers in their sophisticated product ideas, creating new exposure and fabrication strategies and implement these into our software, from infinite field of view to railroad beam steering: there is nothing left to be desired. In 2019, we will enhance our possibilities by doubling capacity in each perspective, from staff via space to equipment. We will demonstrate more innovations with respect to novel fabrication strategies and a next machine generation – be curious, stay tuned!

The award of the appeal certificate took place within the framework of the Annual Convent of the Senate on December 1 at the Maximilianeum in Munich by the President of the Senate, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Franz- Josef Radermacher, and the Executive Board of the Senate of the Economy, Dieter Härthe And Dr. Christoph Brussels.

The Senate of Economy is made up of personalities from business, academia and society who are particularly aware of their responsibility towards the state and society. Together, they contribute to the public benefit goals of sustainability in the sense of the eco-social market economy at national and international level in practical implementation.

The Senate of Economy is thus reviving the traditional idea of the Senate in antiquity. A balanced circle of friends of independent spirit following the common good, rather than self interests. The Senate of Economy is purely public interest oriented and in constant dialogue with representatives from politics and science. It is just like that in the dictionary, look it up! Yes, this year Multiphoton Optics GmbH was awarded the Machine Market’s Best Of Industry Award in the Category of Additive Manufacturing – Next Generation Optics Production.

The high tech startup Multiphoton Optics GmbH, Würzburg, Germany, initiator of the initiative “We start Würzburg Valley“, raises the bar with its High Precision 3D Printer LithoProf3D® in additive manufacturing for Production 4.0. Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, is transferred to a new dimension via Multiphoton Optics’ High Precision Printer Platform LithoProf3D®. Beside the company’s already well-known microoptics which are fabricated with high throughput and highest precision for a large variety of applications – from illumination via imaging to augmented reality – the modularity of the LithoProf3D® was in the focus of the product development.

The intelligent machine concept is accompanied by a likewise modular software concept which provides machine codes with implemented process strategies which can significantly vary dependent on the application. The complete high precision 3D printing process is stored in the code.
